Hare Krishna Solitary…

Posted on 2/13/2019 at 5:45:33 PM

It may come as no surprise that in this day and age finding like-minded Hare Krishna devotees is very, very hard. So much has happened since Srila Prabhupada left the planet.

First you have the bogus guru camp. These are followers of the bogus gurus who took over the movement in the spring of 1978, just after Prabhupada left his body. Then, you have the old school devotees who were initiated by Prabhupada who still cling to ISKCON for lack of anything better to do, being stuck in the status quo not wanting to rock the boat. Then there’s those who got shunned, excommunicated or rejected on account of questioning the authority of the fake guru acaryas. Some of them completely left, some still follow the trachings of Srila Prabhupada but not within the confines of ISKCON. There are those who are fighting the good fight to take back ISKCON to return it to its former glory. And there are those who say that ISKCON is a lost cause and is not saveable, that it is in ruin forever. Hence, a new form of ISKCON is in order. I’m sure there are probably more flavours of devotees out there, but these are the ones that I am most familiar with.

Then there are folks like me who practice Krishna Consciousness in a solitaty manner. I say “solitary”, but I am not completely alone. I do have the company of my dear sweet husband who shares my beliefs and practices with me. So we two are in reality one in Krishna Consciousness. That being said, I (we) am (are) truly a solitary in our devotion and practice. We have never stepped foot in an ISKCON temple, although I have met a few devotees here and there throughout my life. We have a space set up in our home for worship. We follow the regulative principles and chant every day. We have a small store at the local market where we distribute books and preach to anyone who shows an interest in spiritual truths who cares to listen. There is a beautiful photograph of Prabhupada that is smartly framed which is hung above the doorway, overseeing everything that goes on in our little store. Those who come into our humble little shop all claim to feel a special kind of calm and inner peace when they enter and most seem to linger there, chatting about things spiritual in nature. We are tiny in stature but we are big in faith. And I really do believe that we make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

This is not to say that we don’t try to keep up on the news within the Movement. We watch from afar. We view streaming Darshan live from temples all around the world, watch videos, read Prabhupada’s books, journal, write and chant the Holy Names: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare!

I think Prabhupada said it best when he declared that he would live on and preach through his many writings in letters, lectures, talks, recordings and books forever. That’s what keeps us going.

Which brings me to the reason for this post today. Just a short while ago, I was scanning through YouTube videos, looking for new devotee films about Srila Prabhupada and the Hare Krishna Movement, when I happened across a video of an interview with Hansadutta das. He was talking with the interviewer about lone solitary devotees who are practicing Krishna Consciousness on their own, some for many, many years and even decades. This really piqued my interest and gave me hope and a huge shot in the arm for validation that we really are not alone and that we are on the right track. A very happy feeling! 😊

This brings me to the point of thinking of Yamuna Devi Dasi. She distanced herself from ISKCON but not Prabhupada or the Movement. I marveled at that. I tried to imagine what that would be like and how hard it would be. Now I know…

So, in closing I lend this advice to all who dare to follow a different drummer but stay strong on the path of Krishna Consciousness the way Srila Prabhupada taught that you are most certainly not alone. You are in the very best of company. We are all connected through the true Acaryas, starting with Srila Prabhupada and up through the sampradaya succession all the way to Krishna. Just have faith and keep your eyes upon the Spiritual Sky!

Until next time…
